Twerton Nursery and Infant School is committed to the inclusion of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). 

We believe that all children should be equally valued in school, and we’re constantly striving to ensure that all of our children reach their full potential.

We pride ourselves on creating a caring and safe environment where all children can thrive. We treat each child as an individual and take into account their different needs and backgrounds.  

We recognise that children learn at different rates and that many factors can affect achievement, including ability, emotional state, age and maturity.  

We believe that meeting a child’s needs is a shared responsibility. We value and endeavour to constantly promote the role of parents/carers as partners in ensuring their children make optimum progress.

At Twerton Infant School, all children have access to Quality First Teaching from their class teacher. All staff have regular training to update our skills in meeting the needs of all children. We have a large number of experienced Teaching Assistants who are committed to ensuring that children feel safe and listened to.  

However, if your child is identified as having a special educational need (SEN), they may be supported by taking part in one of the following additional interventions.

Thrive

The Thrive Approach supports
children’s emotional health, wellbeing and social skills, all of which are needed to enable effective. Our Thrive practitioner Amy Tidswell supports children through Thrive sessions on two days each week

Forest School

We’re proud of our on-site Forest School, which provides an excellent opportunity to bring learning to life. Children can explore, investigate and discover the natural world with our dedicated educator Emily Paterson-Russell. 

Rainbow Club

Rainbow Club is a nurture breakfast club for children who may be finding the transition from home to school a bit tricky. Mrs Towner provides a warm welcome and breakfast at the start of the school day, then supports children with joining their class. 

Cosy Club

Cosy Club provides a quieter, cosier environment for children who may want an alternative to the busy playground during lunchtime play. Mrs Padfield provides lots of fun games and crafts for the children. 

Social Skills Group

Kate and Andy from Brighter Futures run regular Social Skills groups where children can learn about the importance of turn-taking and listening to each other through fun and creative activities.

Play Therapy

School counsellor Angie Sowton provides Play Therapy for children who may need it. Angie works closely with parents, providing them with regular updates alongside providing joint sessions with both child and parent. 

Every child should feel valued and listened to. We pride ourselves on knowing each child’s individual needs and strengths, as well as providing a warm and friendly family atmosphere at school.

Hala Langan

Our Experienced SENCo

Hala Langan is the School’s Inclusion Leader and Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo). Mrs Langan works Tuesday to Friday and can be contacted via the school office, or through our contact page. Also, please feel free to see Mrs Langan outside on duty at the beginning and the end of the day.

COMFORT IN THE CLASSROOM

We ensure each classroom has a Safe Place for children to access when needed

It’s important that our classroom setting is accessible and supportive for every child. While there are some stairs in our environment, we make every effort to provide accommodations to ensure all children can fully participate.

We have Regulation Stations using Colour Monsters in each class for children to be able to recognise and express how they are feeling.

This gives children the opportunity to talk to an adult about any worries and use resources that will help them to regulate and return to being ready to learn.

Children also have the opportunity to see Mrs Tidswell, our Thrive Practitioner, on a Tuesday or Thursday.

Moving on

We do our best to ensure that your child has a smooth transition into our school, and another when they move on to a new school.

We do this through meetings with the previous/next setting, visits, visual resources, and working with children’s and family’s individual needs.
